                                                                         GEN IV ENGINE FAMILY 2006 +

The Gen IV engine family started as early as 2005, with the introduction of the LS2 engine, the only Gen IV engine to use the Gen III Cathedral style intake ports.  Gen IV can be distinctly recognized by the placement of the knock sensors on the sides of the block, which is an entirely different design. The cam sensor has been moved to the front timing chain cover, which is deeper to accommodate the sensor and reluctor wheel. The crankshaft reluctor is a 58 tooth design, replacing the 24x style of the earlier engines. The crank sensor has a gray connector instead of the black, and these are not interchangeable. The MAP sensor is placed on the top of the intake manifold towards the front on the top. 

All Gen IV engines are drive by wire (DBW) and use an exclusively different engine controller which is more compact and is capable of faster processing and learning strategies. Another major change is that the transmission controller is separate from the the main pcm. The 4L60E's have a external controller, known as the T42. All other automatics use the T43, which is incorporated into the transmission itself.

The 2005 1X Cam sprocket can only be used with the 24X crank reluctor and either the LS1 or E40 style ecm's.
